Hard to believe

  • Record spin. It completes a full rotation in 1.4 milliseconds — faster than a kitchen blender, on an object heavier than the Sun.

What it actually is

  • What it is. The collapsed core of a star that exploded: about one and a half Suns of matter crushed into a ball the size of a city, held up only by the refusal of neutrons to be squeezed further.
  • Reading the fog. Its dispersion measure is 22.4 — a count of the free electrons in every column of space between here and there. Those electrons slow the low-frequency pulses more than the high ones, and that lag is how its distance is worked out.
  • It has a partner. It orbits a companion star, and because its pulses are such a precise clock the orbit can be traced to extraordinary accuracy. A binary pulsar is how gravitational waves were first proven to be real, decades before one was directly detected.

  • Seen from everywhere. It sits almost on the celestial equator, so it can be seen from essentially anywhere on Earth.
